![]() ![]() Her novel The Wind Done Gone tells the story of Gone With the Wind from the perspective of the daughter of Mammy and Gerald O’Hara and thus the half sister of Scarlett O’Hara. In 2001 Alice Randall, a Harvard literature graduate and Nashville, Tennessee, writer of songs and scripts, set out to put the record straight. For them, Gone With the Windhas little to tell us about the real experiences of African Americans in the South during and after the Civil War. Many readers, however, especially African Americans, have complained that the novel is one-sided that it demeans the role of Black people and that its portrayals of such characters as Mammy and Prissy are racist stereotypes. Its sweeping, romantic story of the South and the Civil War (1861-65) has entranced readers since the day of its publication. Few novels have captured the popular American imagination more strongly than Margaret Mitchell’s 1936 book, Gone With the Wind. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() But her life soon changes when a feral, dirty-faced boy who has been sneaking onto her land to steal from her garden comes into her life. But when her mother dies, leaving her to live alone in the house she grew up in, to work the farm she was raised to take care of, she finds herself lost in a kind of loneliness she hadn't expected. Tennessee, 1950: Still single and in her early thirties, Ivorie Walker is considered an old maid a label she takes with good humor and a grain of salt. In this full-length novel from the New York Times Bestselling author of The Christmas Hope series Donna VanLiere has written a beautifully rendered and poignant story about one woman's unlikely path to motherhood and the healing power of love. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Empire of Vines traces the development of wine culture as grape growing expanded from New York to the Midwest before gaining ascendancy in California-a progression that illustrates viticulture's centrality to the nineteenth-century American projects of national expansion and the formation of a national culture.Įmpire of Vines details the ways would-be gentleman farmers, ambitious speculators, horticulturalists, and writers of all kinds deployed the animating myths of American wine culture, including the classical myth of Bacchus, the cult of terroir, and the fantasy of pastoral republicanism. Nonetheless, as author Erica Hannickel shows, this fantasy is deeply rooted in the history of grape cultivation in America. The lush, sun-drenched vineyards of California evoke a romantic, agrarian image of winemaking, though in reality the industry reflects American agribusiness at its most successful. ![]() ![]() On this odyssey that leads her to the lost oracles of Delfi and Amun-Ra and to rediscovered ancient cities and rituals, Hannah will experience forbidden loves, painful betrayals, and poignant reunions. ![]() Determined to help them uphold pagan culture and traditions, Hannah embarks on a dangerous quest to unite the fractured pieces of the Emerald Tablet-the last hope to save the pagans and create peace. ![]() ![]() Revered for her beautiful singing voice, the young slave is invited to perform at the city's Great Library, where she becomes friends with the revered mathematician and philosopher, Hypatia, as well as other pagans who curate its magnificent collections.
